Green Bay Packers fans are probably still breathing out after having to hold their breath for several months out of season when it came to the future of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The reigning NFL MVP reportedly requested a change of scenery this offseason and was even considering retiring at some point. The team was able to bring him back by reshuffling his contract and making several concessions - including that they would revisit his situation at the end of the year.
One of the concessions ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that “mechanisms will be put in place to address Rodgers' problems with the team.” It’s vague, but one thing Rodgers admitted at his very honest press conference about returning to the team was that he wanted more to say in staff decisions. Since cut day is this week, one has to wonder how much Rodgers was involved in providing his input. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said they had talks with Rodgers, and those talks were “excellent.”
“I’ve had really good conversations throughout the camp with Aaron and Matt [LaFleur], and I think the communication has been really, really good, “said Gutekunst, via Pro Football Talk. “When we went into this kind of decision-making period, I think everyone - all the people involved in it - were very aware of what was going on and why we did what we were doing. So I feel really good “And the conversations I have had with Aaron have been excellent.”
These are all systems that go to the Packers in 2021, as they once again have Super Bowl dreams. This season may be different from the last two, as Rodger’s situation has a bit of a “Last Dance” feel. So is it guaranteed that Rodgers will leave next offseason or retire? Maybe things can be smoothed out for good in Green Bay.
