Covid vaccine pass to be required in Scotland for major events later this month, Sturgeon reveals

The Scottish Government has said it will hold a parliamentary vote next week to require Covid vaccine passports for all those attending nightclubs and major events around the country to halt the recent rise in cases.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon informed the Scottish Parliament about the Covid situation on Wednesday that her party would hold the vote to “Help control the spread of the virus as we enter the fall and winter."

The measure would mean that anyone over the age of 18 would have to show proof of double vaccination against Covid before gaining access to nightclubs, adult venues, indoor events with more than 500 participants, outdoor events with at least 4,000 in the audience and any event with over 10,000 people .

The decision to implement a vaccine passport system comes as Covid cases continue to rise in Scotland, where some parts of the country see the highest prevalence of the virus across Europe. The Scottish Government registered 6,170 new infections on 1 September, bringing the total number of positive cases in the country since the start of the pandemic to 436,688.

As the SNP and the Scottish Greens have a majority of seats through their power-sharing agreement, the policy is expected to be adopted and implemented soon, but it must still be the subject of a vote in the Scottish Parliament.

The SNP’s decision to introduce a vaccine passport marks a reversal of the position outlined by Health Minister Humza Yousaf in July when he said he was “skeptical” of the proposal and feared that it would only “Increase inequality g."

Scotland is not the first European nation to have introduced such a system. Neighboring England is set to impose similar restrictions in late September on venues such as nightclubs, while France, Italy and Ireland require proof of vaccination for access to a number of venues, such as restaurants and public services.
