The final event for the biggest season in PGA Tour history (a total of 50 events) has finally arrived, and much is at stake over four days in Atlanta. The top 30 golfers on the PGA Tour this season will line it up at East Lake Golf Club with $ 46 million on the course at the 2020 Tour Championship.
Dustin Johnson is the defending champion, but he enters this week’s tournament seven back by leader Patrick Cantlay. Rory McIlroy won this event in both 2016 and 2019, but he is eight left by Cantlay, who starts 10 under after winning the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club last weekend.
There are countless stories to follow, and not all involve the outrageous amount of cash at stake Sunday afternoon. Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns try to make their mark on the Ryder Cup team. Patrick Reed tries to jump back after being hospitalized the first week of the playoffs (he has not played either of the first two events). He is also trying to make his mark on the Ryder Cup team.
There’s a PGA Tour Player of the Year award up for grabs, probably more theaters around Bryson DeChambeau that have become this season’s lightning rod du jour. Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas vie for their second FedEx Cup titles.
